In 1955, club members voted unanimously to rename the stadium Santiago Bernabéu.
Over the decades, the stadium has undergone numerous transformations.
It has hosted:
- European Cup finals
- Champions League finals
- Spanish Cup finals
- FIFA World Cup matches
- International matches
- Major sporting events

The stadium also underwent a major modernisation project designed to make it a year-round entertainment, sporting and commercial destination.
More than a football stadium
